Analysis Paralysis

The state of over-analyzing (or over-thinking) a situation so that a decision or action is never taken, in effect paralyzing the outcome. This state of over-thinking about a decision leads the individual to the point where a choice never gets made, thereby creating a paralyzed state of inaction.

Does this sound familiar? In regards to IT it is a very common issue we hear from our new customers. Taking the time to analyze a situation is a very important step in the decision making process but at some point a decision must be made or the opportunity will pass you by.

With the excessive amounts of information related to IT on the internet and the abundant solutions to every problem it is easy to see how so many small business owners can fall victim to analysis paralysis. A quick Google search for “backup software” or any other of a number of IT problems small business are faced with will literally pull up hundreds of different companies offering the “Absolute best solution to X”. Reading through the web pages, weighing the pros and cons, comparing this feature to that feature, oh yeah and I almost forgot cost analysis, can be very overwhelming. Its tough when what you really want to do is focus on your business.

"At some point a decision must be made or the opportunity will pass you by"

Two effective ways to manage analysis paralysis are, getting the opinion of someone you trust, and/or delegating the decision making to someone else. Completely delegating the decision making to someone else can be a somewhat difficult task for the typical small business owner who is accustomed to making all of the business decisions. Getting the opinion of someone you trust, especially when they are an expert in that field, can significantly reduce the inability to make a decision.
